# Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

## Set up MFA for an extra layer of account security.

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account. Even if someone has your password, they can't sign in without the second factor.

### Setting up the Microsoft Authenticator App (Recommended)

1. Download **Microsoft Authenticator** from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android)
2. On your computer, go to [https://aka.ms/mfasetup](https://aka.ms/mfasetup)
3. Sign in with your email and password
4. When prompted, select **Mobile app** and choose **Receive notifications for verification**
5. Click **Set up**
6. A QR code will appear on screen — open the Authenticator app on your phone and scan it
7. A test notification will be sent to your phone — approve it
8. MFA is now active

### How it works day-to-day

When you sign in from a new device or location, you'll receive a notification on your phone. Simply tap **Approve** in the Authenticator app.

### Backup methods

During setup, register a backup method (phone number for SMS codes) in case you lose access to your phone.
